Characters in Rue the Day: The Undercover Heir Book 1 by Cat Muldoon

Characters and plot are both important in a story, obviously. Without the characters, there is no action and thus no plot.

Rue the Day Characters – Faerie unless otherwise indicated

Principal protagonist
Lynne / Aislinn (Ays-LEEN):Does not learn until partway through that she is Princess of Faerie. She was raised in the mortal world because Queen Neala wandered into the boundarylands when the mists that allow passage between Faerie and the human world were up. She suffers from a constant headache and learns that it is because her innate psychic gifts were blocked. Her mother disappeared when they were trying to cross through the mists and Aislinn got stuck on the human side. She was shuffled to over a dozen foster homes and as a result is extremely observant and just as wary.

Mistress Meave (MEE-uv): Premier of the order of the Anointed Hand (healers), cunning, melancholy, and talented with herbs, scents, etc.
Master Cian (KEE-an Master Healer, brother of the Queen who swore a vow to bring Aislinn back somehow; prone to wandering out in nature, disdains court life, highly empathic
Lord Rhoedrie (HROAD-ree): former apprentice under Cian’s mentorship, now a full healer, highly empathic, loves to be in nature, loves animals
Mistress Eliatha (elli-A-tha):Royal Bard and Principal of the Order of the Gilded Harp (the order of bards), trusted advisor of the Crown, loves Cian
Queen Neala (Nee-AH-la), got caught in the mortal world while pregnant with Aislinn, managed to return, but without her daughter, she spends most of the book in a coma-like state induced by treachery and poison
King Nevin (NE-vin): King of Faerie
Lord Callum (KAL-lum):Lusty warrior who Aislinn bests, vying for higher position and conquest of women
Ultan: Skilled warrior, recently wed with pregnant wife, cheerful disposition
Ardal: Warrior
Captain Eogan (EE-gun): Captain of the Guard, makes/uses whips, attempts to kill the King with a blowdart
Sharla: (Elderly human) woman who offered Lynne a tiny shepherd’s hut to live in as exchange for tending her land, taught her Tai Chi
Master Bryan: Master Silversmith, buoyant personality, member of an influential group bound by blood to serve the Crown called the BloodBound
Lady Fiona (Fee-OH-na): Posing as Lady in Service (ladies maid basically) to Aislinn but really her Guard, member of elite security, bloodbound, works undercover on various missions for the Crown
Grand Master Fargal (Leaf): Leaf is a nickname for the ancient Master Gardener
Nyssa (NIS-sa): Novice healer, jumpy and easily influenced, appears to be about Aislinn’s age, kinswoman to Meave
Holy Mother Orla: High Priestess who tests Aislinn, stern and officious
Diarmid: Announces proceedings at High Court

Selkie, the Sealfolk, who take on a humanoid appearance on land but are by nature seals
Khadri (KHa-dree): BloodBound, heavily pregnant Selkie (not faerie)
Suhtri: Selkie healer who helps heal Aislinn after she is attacked by Meave's magical device
Corlath: Selkie guardian assigned, to his distain, to protect Aislinn while she is with the Selkie for healing. He comes to appreciate and befriend herand to love her, though he will not admit such a thing until book 2.

Horses
Faylani and Grayston: Horses who mind-speak

Cat
Bree (cat)– Aislinn’s old cat
